Malta is a sun-drenched archipelago packed with history right in the middle of the Mediterranean. Valletta, Europe's smallest capital, is a stunning UNESCO baroque masterpiece. The waters are crystal clear, the megalithic temples are literally older than the Egyptian pyramids, and English is an official language โ so zero language barrier.
Malta squeezes an insane amount of variety into a tiny island: the fortified Three Cities, the Blue Lagoon in Comino, dramatic Dingli Cliffs, pumping nightlife in St Julian's and Paceville, and the rural charm of Gozo. You can see the whole thing in a week, and low-cost flights make it incredibly budget-friendly.
May through October for beach weather. September is the sweet spot โ still warm, fewer tourists, ocean temp is perfect. Winter stays mild around 60ยฐF but can get windy.
Pastizzi (flaky pastries stuffed with ricotta or peas โ insanely good), rabbit stew (the national dish), ftira (Maltese pizza), ฤงobลผ biลผ-ลผejt (crusty bread with tomato and olive oil), lampuki (local catch) and kinnie (Malta's own citrusy soda).
Valletta for baroque culture and history. Sliema for shopping and waterfront restaurants. St Julian's and Paceville for nightlife central. Mdina for the atmospheric Silent City. Gozo for nature, diving and peace.
Malta Airport (MLA) is smack in the middle of the island, just 20 minutes from Valletta by bus. Malta is tiny โ nothing is more than 40 minutes away by car.
